Mehndi Design

Bridal Mehndi Designs

Wedding is an elaborate affair in India, comprising of a large number of rituals, customs and traditions. One of the important rituals, especially in context of the bride, comprises of ‘Mehndi’ (commonly known as henna). As a part of this ritual, the powder of henna leaves is mixed with water (and many-a-times, oil and lemon juice as well), to form a paste. This paste is then applied on the hands as well as the feet of the bride, in the form of intricate patterns. The henna is removed only after the design dries off completely. However, the bride cannot wash her hands and feet with water, for the next 12 hours at least, to make sure that the color comes out to be dark and rich.

Henna And Hair Dye

  1. Step 1
Purchase 100 to 500 grams of body art quality powdered henna, depending on the length of your hair.

  2. Step 2
Pour the henna powder into a plastic container.

  3. Step 3
Mix in just enough citrus juice to create a paste about the consistency of yogurt.

  4. Step 4
Cover the container with plastic wrap and allow it to sit overnight at room temperature, around 70 degrees F. This allows the dye to release for long lasting, vibrant results.
  5. Apply the Henna to Your Hair

  6. Step 1
Wash and dry your hair and comb it into sections. You should be wearing an old T-shirt or have a towel wrapped around your shoulders.

  7. Step 2
Work the henna into the hair and scalp, starting at the nape of the neck. You can smear it on with your gloved hand, use a squeeze bottle or use a piping bag. Apply it thick, like cake frosting.

  8. Step 3
Continue sectioning off your hair and applying the henna. Make sure all of your hair is thickly coated with no dry spots below the top layer.

  9. Step 4
Wrap your entire head with plastic wrap or with a plastic grocery bag to keep the henna warm and moist while it is processing.

  10. Step 5
Wipe up any henna that may have gotten onto your forehead, around your ears and on your neck.

  11. Step 6
Allow the henna to sit for two to four hours. People with hair that tends to be resistant to dye can leave it on longer.

  12. Step 7
Wash the henna out of your hair by rinsing as much of it out as possible with water first, and then shampooing. Conditioner helps to release the last bits of henna from the hair.
